Marvel vs. DC

Just for fun, I'm going to start a new feature called "Marvel vs. DC." I'm going to randomly read a comic from each, review them, and declare a winner for the week.

This week, among the books I picked up, I'm gonna pit World War Hulk #2 against Green Arrow: Year One #1.

Marvel:

World War Hulk #2

Hulk and his warbound allies are after Dr. Strange and Reed Richards. A host of heroes are between them. She-Hulk tries reason, but uh-uh, nothing's gonna stop the Jade Giant, it looks like. I'm a big fan of Hulk/Thing fights, and this one, while short, is pretty good. Romita Jr. does a great job of getting the awesome ferocity of the Hulk across, and I was pretty impressed by how Pak shows the fear and desperation of Strange and Richards, who are almost consigned to their fate. Perhaps it's just me, but I caught a whiff of comparison to the Iraq conflict. The whole idea of, OK, you guys started this, and here's what you get kinda struck me as pretty symbolic of our times. I'm probably reading too much into it, but.... you get the idea.
I'm very interested to see where this "war" ends up. Obviously, major characters like Dr. Strange and Iron Man aren't going anywhere, but even with that understood, it will be interesting to see the Marvel Universe when this is over.

DC:

Green Arrow: Year One #1

Ok, I will admit it, I'm not a huge GA fan. The only exposure I've really had to Ollie has been in JLA, where he's usually been sidelined. But, Ive like Andy Diggle and Jock's work on The Losers, so I thought I would give it a try. The story establishes Ollie's wealth, and his lack of a "calling" by showing his attraction to extreme sports, partying, and the like. One of the things I liked about this issue is Diggle pretty much makes you dislike Ollie, who is pompous, spoiled, and arrogant. I knew about Ollie being marooned on an island, and the robin hood slant, but I must admit, It didn't cause any "ho-hum" same-old, same old reaction from me. If each issue equals this one, then I'm all in.

The deciderer:

I'm gonna have to go with the GA book, even though the WWHulk was quite tasty also. The deciding factor for me was the fact that while the Hulk storyline is new and quite interesting, the GA book took a story I already knew, and made it more interesting and updated.
